How Packet8 VoIP Phone Service Works

Packet8 offers many different Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) packages and services to their customers. They offer three different residential packages to choose from and nine different business packages to choose from. They offer both voice and video phone service to all their customers.

The basic idea behind VoIP is that both your incoming and outgoing phone calls are sent over a broadband Internet connection. There is a broadband modem used that is provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or you can purchase one from the computer section of your favorite store.

When you subscribe to VoIP service from Packet8, they will provide you with a special router that is used for this service. It will have a phone jack in it as well as several LAN ports. This will allow you to hook up several computers and the phone, as well, to the same router.

One thing that makes Packet8 VoIP different from other VoIP providers is their use of Packet8 adapters that allow you to send VoIP signals over your household power lines. This is a practice that has been popular in Europe for providing broadband service but has not been popular in the United States. You will be more familiar with the usual Cable modem or DSL modem that is common in the United States.

With VoIP, the phone or videophone signals are sent over the broadband connection to whatever number you dial. The information is transmitted in packets in the same manor as your email. This allows the information to be sent to any location in the world quickly and by any route needed to get it there. The packets are reassembled in the right order to allow the recipient to understand what you are saying.

This process means that the signal is all digital and is crystal clear. You will notice some signal breakup if you use an all wireless connection (wireless modem, wireless router, wireless card) or you have a lot of computers using the same connection. They do recommend a broadband connection because you do need it to get the proper data transfer rate in order to have a good signal.

Packet8 VoIP provides a good service for the price they charge. Packet8 makes VoIP simple for anyone to connect their new service with easy to follow instructions. It comes with the Packet8 adapter and there is a video version of it on their website. They have good documentation for all their primary and accessory products that you can purchase with your service.
