The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 : The Basics Explained

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

The Android phone market is now larger thanks to the release of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. The dimensions of the device are akin to most you would find on an Android smartphone, at 130 grams in weight and 119 x 62 x 13mm in size. You can perform functions quickly thanks to the 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, making browsing the Internet, checking emails and downloading apps faster than ever before.

The interface that Sony Ericsson implemented on the Xperia X10 strives to create a user friendly platform that makes using the device effortless and entertaining. Titled UX (abbreviated for User Experience), the interface organizes media and social networking information together so that the user can readily access this information with minimal effort. A single entry on the user’s contact list can pull up not only that person’s basic contact information, but an array of other information related to that contact, including social networking updates (Facebook, Twitter, etc.), text messaging history, tagged photos, etc.

The 4″ TFT screen features an incredible 480 x 854 resolution, making text and images very easy on the eye. This touchscreen is scratch resistant, which is something not many other smartphones can boast, and which ensures that your phone will stay in good condition as long as you need it. The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 also features a very nice camera integrated into the unit, which is 8.1 megapixels in resolution, meaning the pictures you take on them look great even when viewed on a full size computer screen.

When you get the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, you will find an effective media player that can play any file format from mp3 to WAV files. If you want to surf the Internet, feel free to do so with the full HTML browser, and Facebook and Twitter connectivity is incredibly easy. You also get the typical 3G HDSDPA, GPS, Bluetooth, Wifi, and what have you to increase your connection options. The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 features 1 GB of integrated memory, which you can expand up to 16GB if you so desire with the handy microSD slot.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 is a great way to introduce yourself to the smartphone market, or even just to upgrade your existing phone. It is certainly one of the phones of 2010.

Jailbreaking Cell Phones Is Legal

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

The Librarian of Congress has posted that jailbreaking cell phones and other wireless devices is legal, so if you want to jailbreak you new cell phone, go for it.

Persons who circumvent access controls in order to engage in noninfringing uses of works in these six classes will not be subject to the statutory prohibition against circumvention.

And this is the section that relates to cell phones:

(2) Computer programs that enable wireless telephone handsets to execute software applications, where circumvention is accomplished for the sole purpose of enabling interoperability of such applications, when they have been lawfully obtained, with computer programs on the telephone handset.

(3) Computer programs, in the form of firmware or software, that enable used wireless telephone handsets to connect to a wireless telecommunications network, when circumvention is initiated by the owner of the copy of the computer program solely in order to connect to a wireless telecommunications network and access to the network is authorized by the operator of the network.

You can read more about it at The Library of Congress.

How to Choose a Wireless Smart Cell Phone from a Sprint Reseller or Indirect Dealer

Monday, May 10th, 2010

It seems rather daunting these days walking into a cell phone or smart phone store and choosing the right cell phone, blue tooth hands free unit, data plan and cellular plan that is right for you. So, I thought I might do a little investigation on my own and tell you what I learned. Now there are AT&T Stores, Verizon Stores, Apple Stores, and you can buy a Cellular Smart phone from one of the following manufacturers:

•    Samsung
•    HTC
•    Sanyo
•    Sony
•    Apple
•    Google
•    Motorola
•    LG
•    Nokia

And, heck there are probably some I didn’t list, not to mention all the Chinese clones coming into our markets. If you go to a Sprint Store you are going to see models that you don’t see at the AT&T store and models in both of those stores that may or may not be in the Verizon store. Some cellular carriers have special deals with some of the phones that are made especially for certain programs and special offers.

When I went into a Sprint Store, an “indirect dealer” in the area here in Palm Desert CA – Skycomm Inc., I talked with two exceptionally knowledgeable and techno-savvy employees; Moi and Kathy, who clearly deserve whatever it is they pay them. The manager of operations Cheryl Witteman was out assisting clients, and I barraged her Sprint Team Retail Concierges with mega questions. To my surprise they didn’t skip a beat. I found a similar experience recently in another Sprint dealer on the other side of the valley as well. Sprint trains their people very well indeed.

When I went into an AT&T store in Tucson, which was quite busy, I was happy with Sam the retail salesman who explained the plans, early penalties, and lock-in agreement for 18-months or 24 months and how much discount I could get on a Nokia smart phone if I purchased within the month (2-days left).

All the companies run special promotions and if you like a certain phone, and a certain carrier, you might want to hustle on the deal, because cell phone models change, and every six months, the whole row of smart phone innovations are new. But rest assured there will be a new sales promotion and new equipment coming in with perhaps new features next month as well.

Sprint retail locations offer the following brand name phones; Blackberry, Sanyo, Samsung, HTC, and Palm – and several models of each, lots of choices. Of course, if you want an iPhone you cannot get one there. But around Palm Desert they told me that the golfing crowd very much liked the Blackberry phones and the Palms which allows them to send emails, surf the net and have basic GPS options – yes, while golfing and cruising around the club house in their Hummer Golf Carts? Indeed, they enjoy all the rest of the applications off the course too – along with all the normal high-tech smart phone features we are all used too.

Now then, I recommend if you want a Sprint Phone to check out the latest deals online before you buy and I also recommend that you check out various models to compare. Then make sure the plan you are getting works for you and that it is competitive. And, for sure check to see if they offer the 3G or 4G or both. Please consider all this.

T-Mobile myTouch 3G – Is It the Choice for Me?

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

The smart phone war seems to be a race between the huge brand names of Google’s Nexus One and Apples 3GS, but in reality there are several other contenders; phones like the Motorola Droid, Palm Pre, and the T-Mobile myTouch 3G. You are probably familiar with the Nexus One and Apple 3GS and heard all the rave reviews of the touch-screen technology, the navigate-ability, the GPS, mapping software, applications, speed, ease of use, and cost! And really isn’t it the cost that has you scratching your head a bit?

LetsTalk.com

Indeed, you can buy a notebook cheaper than one of these latest personal tech smart phones these days, why is that? Well, brand name for one, but also the smaller things get the more they cost. Still, just because Apple and Google phones are running away with a huge chunk of the market share and notoriety, does not mean the competition is going to sit on its laurels and not respond. Believe me they are. Even the Samsung Behold will have an evolved model in 2010. And that Motorola Droid is a cut above the Apple 3GS, and unless you are a cultish Apple Lover, you have to admit it gives it a real run, especially for its money.

Okay so, let’s discuss the T-Mobile myTouch 3G. Obviously, T-mobile tells you something about who is behind that model, and myTouch let’s you know that they too have the touch screen technology and 3G tells you it runs on 3G networks and is certainly a player in that realm. This phone can also be bought from HTC and their version is the “Magic” model. The price is real comparable to the Motorola Droid at $200 and pretty much is a very value based phone when compared to the pricey Apple 3GS or Google Nexus One.

All-in-all it is a very good looking phone and a good price. I personally like the Motorola better since it is the same price, but they are both pretty good phones. With the Android 1.5 release this smart phone sure works nice and T-mobile is all in, and it’s nice to have the landscape virtual keyboard, and the voice navigation is cool too. I think you will like this phone if you choose it.

Palm Pre Plus Versus Motorola Droid; What’s All the Fuss?

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Few would deny that Palm Pre Plus is not an elegant little device. It is cool, trendy, and has lots of cool features – brilliant technology indeed. Still, there are some who have compared it to the Motorola Droid and comeback with some critique. Now before we trash on the Palm Pre Plus, let’s remember than when it is stacked up next to the Apple 3GS iPhone, the Motorola Droid walks away as the clear champion. Needless to say, any smart phone would be challenged against the Droid by Motorola.

Interestingly enough, in an article in Hispanic Business News, reporter and personal tech tester and writer Jeremy Nisen stated in an article titled; “Palm Pre Plus: Impressive Technology Hasn’t Ironed Out the Frustrations,” dated March 2, 2010 seems to agree. Like most he liked the slide out key board, mirror, and “card-based operating system” he said. He is right, I completely agree with his assessment of Palm Pre, plus, I’d add that the phone just looks cool to me.

LetsTalk.com

If you look at the reviews in PC World, on YouTube, or in Personal Tech Magazine you will see mixed reviews and most of the reviewers stating that the key board, style, and navigation is a matter of preference, what the user is used to and their likes and dislikes. Thus, the Palm Pre + is not for everyone, but if you are a key-board smart phone type of person, it does hit the spot indeed. Some reviewers have spoken ill of the digital camera feature, but my close friend owns one and he likes it, and he let me try it, it worked fine for me when I snapped some shots of the clerk at Starbucks in the daylight.

Some have said that the touch screen does not work as well as Apple, Droid, or Nexus One, but I thought it was okay, maybe those folks are just spoiled by the other technologies. The ion-lithium battery seems to be insufficient for a full-days usage, which is something you need to think on.

I Just Want a Regular Cell Phone, Not a Super Duper Smart Phone!

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Not everyone is running around trying to look cool, some of us already are. And so, maybe we don’t need a smart phone, all we really need is a cell phone with a few extra features when we need them. You know like a calling plan with sports and news feeds during the day, perhaps stock quotes, and an occasional text message or email. Believe it or not that is all 50% of Americans really need, and it is very easy to get caught up in all the smart phone excitement, but prudent consumers are often those who do not have mega-credit-card debt.

So, if you want to really save your money, let’s consider some of the cellular phones which were shown at Las Vegas Comdex. Now then, one of the most popular phones is the Samsung portable “Quadphone” these were phones given away by AT&T and Cingular Wireless a few years ago. It’s your basic flip phone with digital camera, data capability, news feeds options, email (although cumbersome to use due to no key board), text messaging (also difficult to use), and phone.

It has all the features that the first round of 3G wireless system phones have, and it is one of the “free phones” with an 18-month sign up for service. They probably produced 10s of millions of these little phones. Well, today, you can still get a version of this phone, and all the manufacturers make phones almost exactly like this including; Motorola, LG, HTC, Nokia, Sony, Sanyo, etc. No, you won’t find Google or Apple making the lower end phones, they just like to sell to trendy spend thrifts.

And I am not saying there is anything wrong with first or early adopters of new technology, if that is what you are into. But if you are not, then you might consider the “free phone” option and think on this, when you sign up with your calling plan.

Apple’s 3GS iPhone – How Good is It Really?

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Okay, so Apple’s iPhone is indeed the new standard to which all smart phones are now to be judged, yes, I get that. I understand that Steve Jobs’ Apple Brand is a cult and yield to trying to fight it any longer. And yes, I fully admit this is one bitch’en little personal tech device, and it puts a whole new meaning on the term; “Cell Phone” because this is not just a “cell phone” any more, this is an “I-PHONE” and that’s the new created reality, in the current paradigm of smart phone design. Yes, it is cool.

The camera and video recording features are way better than the Motorola Droid, so, there is absolutely no debate on that, and the phone is completely pretty, sexy, and it’s “way cool” as one X’er exclaimed recently to me. Depending on your reliance on this little high-tech smart phone wonder, you may want to think about the battery longevity, you are going to need charging half way through the day if you are using it to run your business while traveling, but other than that, I’d say this phone gets top billing, after all, it is literally a revolution in smart phone technology.

With a 24-month carrier commitment from AT&T the iPhone is still pretty pricy. Indeed, if I were to personally buy one, I’d really want to upgrade to the 8GB system, which you can add on another $100 smackers. $200 more for the 16GB iPhone which to me is overkill, but what the heck, if you are an early first adopter, what do you care, you want it, and you want it all. Those who own these iPhones love them, myself, I am wondering what comes next. Think on this.

Selling Old Mobile Phones For Cash

Monday, April 5th, 2010

An obvious yet vital question that many people ask when they’re told about getting cash for mobile phones is how much money they’ll receive.  It’s very difficult to put an actual price on how much you’ll get for your mobile phone when you sell it, but there are some general rules that you can remember to get an idea.

The most significant factor which will decide what quantity of money you get when you sell old phones is the make and model.  In general, the newer the phone and the more it cost originally the more that you are likely to get for it as the company will be ready to sell it on at a nice price.  This is the reason why you are certain to get a lower price for an iPhone than you will for other kinds of phones.

Another massive factor that decides how much money you get when you sell an old mobile is what condition that the phone is in.  It’s unsurprising that the majority of old phones are in quite poor condition though most still work.  As long as your phone is still working though you’ll be able to get a good price for it.  Even if your phone doesn’t work you will continue to be ready to get some money for it but it’s going to be anywhere down to 10% of the price .  There aren’t many other places where you can sell broken phones though so this may be the best deal that you can find.

Different corporations will also offer different amounts of cash for phones so that the price that you eventually get will rely on the company that you choose.  You need to factor in the fact that some firms will provide you with envelopes that are free to post so you do not need to pay any additional postage which can eat into the final price .

However , you should remember that checking how much a mobile phone recycling company will be offering for your phone is so easy and only takes a couple of seconds.  These firms need you to sell your mobile so it’s no surprise that they make it as simple as feasible to do so.  There are many websites that will enable you to compare how much you get when you sell mobile phones at a good range of different companies so that you can easily select the best deal.

It is a Sprint Into the 4G Wireless Revolution with AT&T Trailing Verizon Cell Phone Network

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

Just when you thought you knew all you needed to know about cell phone and smart phone networks. Just when you believed you knew where all the dead-zones where in your area or on the route to your most common destination, it appears there is a Game Changer afoot; the 4G wireless network. And when it comes to 4G wireless technologies, there are a number of companies leading the field.

These companies are Sprint, which is Sprinting ahead as we speak opening up San Francisco to 4G capabilities right now. And there is AT&T which dominates markets in many states, and there is Verizon with a larger footprint of subscribers and a significant market share advantage. However, 4G cellular wireless is quickly making all that 3G wireless technology completely obsolete and the new race is on. And these companies want you into a full-featured Smart Phone like yesterday, one with GPS, video talk, news feeds, mobile TV, and unheard of surfing speeds online.

If you think your 3G wireless cell phone running on the AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon Network is good now, ha, you haven’t seen anything yet. Each of these companies is set to spend billions more upgrading their networks. And, Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Nexus One stand to gain even more market share. There is rumor that soon you’ll be able to buy a Google Nexus One and it will be able to run on the Verizon network, whereas, before you were limited to the AT&T Network with that model.

So, who is sprinting the fastest when it comes to 4G wireless roll-out? Well the king of opening up new markets with their blitz marketing type teams has got to be Sprint, they are so aggressive on the ground floor, and with all their indirect dealers, that you can bet they are really giving the big boys a run for their money these days.

Of course, Sprint is huge and it is no Spring Chicken either really. In fact, you can get a full listing of all the 4G cities by going to Sprint dot com – forward slash 4G. The company has already announced that it offers 4G smart phone data and cell phone combination services 3g and 4G in:

Raleigh North Carolina

Greensboro North Carolina

San Antonio Texas

Seattle and Tacoma Washington

Bellingham Washington

Portland Oregon

Philadelphia Pennsylvania

Midland Odessa Texas

Lubbock Texas

Waco — Killen — Temple Texas

Wichita Falls Texas

Abilene Texas

Amarillo Texas

Austin Texas

Corpus Christi Texas

Dallas Fort Worth Texas

Atlanta Georgia

Milledgeville Georgia

Honolulu and Maui Hawaii

Brands for GE data wireless services are only $59.99 per month when you sign up for 24 months and you get 5 GB per month on your data allowance which is quite a significant amount of information flow. If you have a 4G wireless cell phone or smartphone you can still use the Sprint mobile broadband network with all their 3G wireless sites when you’re not in a 4G area. And if you are going to a 4G area you can pay $9.99 for 24 hours of use and tack it onto your 3G service plan it’s almost as if Sprint thought of everything.

And you can bet all the other wireless networks are going to follow. Needless to say, things are about to get very interesting in the smart cellphones space and industry sector, especially here in the good old USA. I hope you will please consider this.
